A finite human yearning for the infinite universe.
Farewell to life that had to endure the gravity of the Earth during all the time...
This article introduces funerals in space and DNA sent into space (Fig. 1).
This is a picture of scattering ashes into space (Fig. 2).
Space funerals have enabled the dead to fulfill their wishes "to bury them in space".
The dead will escape the gravity
that they've been weighing on all their lives,
become part of the infinite universe,
and expand forever (Fig. 3).
Funerals in space and sending my DNA into space have become possible.
Space funerals started in 1997 by American company Celestis (Fig. 4).
There are currently four types of space funeral services operated by Celestis.
Earth Rise returning from space to Earth,
Earth Orbit orbiting the Earth,
Luna sending it to the Moon's orbit or to the Moon's surface,
and Voyager sending it to the Deep Universe.
The prices are, (Fig. 5).
Earth rise: $2,495
Earth orbit: $4,995
Luna: $12,500
Voyager: $12,500
For Earth Rise, the ashes are oxidized by returning to Earth after reaching the stratosphere,
and for Earth Orbit, it orbits the Earth for two to three years before slowly returning to Earth.
Celestis' space funeral was attended by
Star Trek producer Gene Roddenberry,
science-fiction novelist Arthur Clarke,
and astronomer Maretha West.
Not only humans but also pets are expanding into space funerals.
Recently Celestis added a service to send live human DNA into space, in addition to space funerals (Fig. 6).
Celestis introduces that life can be celebrated through DNA transportation services.
DNA is transported after being extracted through the mouth swab.
Celestis transports the ashes and DNA through rockets (Fig. 7).
Former NASA astranatut Jone McBride says,
"I am [..] flooded by emotions of what I see and hear, to be with you,
and think of the wonderful thing you chose to do for your loved ones.
They truly 'slipped the surly bonds of earth.. and touch the face of God."
Celestis' space funeral and DNA transportation services are available through Spacestar in Korea.
Spacestar plans to launch its first service into deep space in June 2021 (Fig. 8).
In addition to Celestis, Mesoloft is one of the companies operating space funeral services (Fig. 9).
Mesoloft uses large-scale advertising balloons to scatter remains in the stratosphere (Fig. 10).
Mesoloft's funeral service varies in price depending on additional options (such as video shooting) (Fig. 11).
Sending remains into space,
and sending DNA
to commemorate death and life.
Now that this has become feasible.
What choice would you make?
